Gallstones

Stones in the gallbladder cause sharp abdominal pain, especially after fatty meals.

Overview

Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder, the small organ that stores bile. Many people have stones without symptoms, but when a stone blocks the flow of bile, it causes sharp pain — often in the upper right abdomen and frequently after fatty meals. Untreated, stones can lead to inflammation, infection, or jaundice.

Common symptoms

  • Sudden, sharp pain in the upper right abdomen
  • Pain that worsens after fatty or heavy meals
  • Pain radiating to the back or right shoulder
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bloating and indigestion

When to see a doctor

If you have recurring abdominal pain after meals, fever with abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or persistent vomiting, see a specialist promptly. Stones blocking the bile duct need urgent evaluation.

How we help

We diagnose gallstones with ultrasound and assess for complications with blood tests and advanced imaging when needed. Treatment depends on your situation — medical management for some cases, or coordinated surgical referral for stones causing repeated symptoms. ERCP can clear stones stuck in the bile duct.
