Overview
Fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat builds up in liver cells. It's increasingly common in India and is often linked to diabetes, obesity, and lifestyle factors. Early stages may have no symptoms, but progression can lead to inflammation (NASH) and eventually cirrhosis if left unchecked.
Common symptoms
- Often no symptoms in early stages
- Fatigue and general weakness
- Mild discomfort in the upper right abdomen
- Elevated liver enzymes on blood tests
- In advanced stages: jaundice, swelling, easy bruising
When to see a doctor
If your blood tests show raised liver enzymes, or if you have diabetes, obesity, or high cholesterol, regular liver health check-ups are important. Fatty liver caught early is largely reversible with the right approach.
