Diarrhoea

Persistent or severe diarrhoea needs proper evaluation — it can have many underlying causes.

Overview

Diarrhoea is a symptom, not a diagnosis — and the underlying cause can range from a simple infection to chronic conditions like IBS, inflammatory bowel disease, or food sensitivities. Short bouts usually settle on their own, but persistent or severe diarrhoea always needs proper evaluation to find the cause and treat it correctly.

Common symptoms

  • Loose or watery stools more than three times a day
  • Abdominal cramping or pain
  • Urgent need to pass stools
  • Bloating and nausea
  • Dehydration in severe cases — dry mouth, dizziness, reduced urination

When to see a doctor

See a specialist if diarrhoea lasts more than a few days, is associated with blood in stools, fever, severe abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration. Chronic diarrhoea lasting more than four weeks always needs proper evaluation.

How we help

We identify the cause through targeted tests — stool studies, blood work, and colonoscopy when needed to check for inflammation or other underlying conditions. Treatment depends on the cause: infections, IBS, IBD, and food sensitivities each have very different management.
